Gordon Cockburns Aushwitz collection is creating a great deal of interest in the media.
This initially was via the local press then nationally. The commemorative exhibition, in honour of Mr Ernest Levy OBE will again tour early in 2011. Dates and venues will be posted in the diary section. Documentary film-maker Alan Pinder is exploring the possibility of recreating the artist's initial visit to Auschwitz, and the years following, whereby he became consumed with a need to transfer onto canvas the horrific images flooding his mind. This collection is not for sale. It is hoped by the Artist that the continued exposure of these works will in some way continue the life long work of Mr Levy, who tirelessly attempted to raise awareness of the horrors of the holocaust and promote the virtues of a humanitarian society across the various creeds and cultures.
MINING SERIES PRESS RELEASE
Gordon, who has a gallery in Maybole, Ayrshire, hails from a proud mining ancestry, with his father and forebears being steeped in all aspects of mining employment. His strong sense of identity, family, community, passions and emotions' are evidenced in his watercolours, ink drawings, pastels and oils. The observer cannot help but be provoked by his imagery.
Gordon’s mining links go back many generations, with his father serving 52 years underground. The community in which he grew up was a proud, closeknit body of people. His studies of the miners themselves, the buildings and environment in which they worked, toiled and played are vividly portrayed. His own father had no wish for his son to follow in his footsteps below ground. To embrace this unique body of persons and capture the environment from which they worked Gordon did spend some time underground, allowing him to bring an informed realism to his work. These studies are truly historical and serve the purpose of reminding those who can remember and those of a younger generation the important social, economic and political role this workforce provided. It is sadly for the most part a bygone era.
The exhibition will run throughout June and July in the Black Diamond Theatre at the National Mining Museum and visitors will have the opportunity to purchase the pieces on show.
